Truly, no words could ever express what a wonderful and generous man Carmine Tropeano was. He understood the importance of living each day to the fullest. He always focused on the positive, telling his loved ones “Look alive!” and singing “Que sera, sera. Whatever will be, will be.” If there was anyone that truly understood the meaning of life, it was Carmine.

Born on July 16, 1933 in Grottolella, Avellino, Italy, and one of five children born to Michael and Virgilia Tropeano (Rosa, Sabato, Angelo and Guisepina Maria) he came to America in 1953. Briefly working for a leather manufacturer and boxing for the Golden Gloves, he soon got a job with the Romerovski Company in Roselle Park. It was there that he met the love of his life, Antonina. After just three months, the two eloped and enjoyed a beautiful marriage spanning 65 years.

Carmine was a successful entrepreneur, first owning a bar and grill in Elizabeth with his brother Angelo known as “The Rainbow Club”. He later went on to own Ann’s Diner on Division Street, also in Elizabeth, where he worked for 25 years before retiring at the early age of 49. Proud of his Italian heritage, he was President of the Italian/American War Veterans Club in Elizabeth for 11 years and also was elected President of the Unico National’s Elizabeth Chapter.

He enjoyed his retirement years splitting his time between New Jersey and Florida. He spent his time bowling, playing bocce, going for walks, and singing and dancing with his loved ones. Always putting his family first, he will be remembered most for his kind heart and unwavering spirit. Even during the toughest times while losing his eyesight due to glaucoma and suffering from brain cancer, he continued to be grateful and greeted each day with a smile often saying, “Be happy, be happy.”

He is survived by his wife, Antonina, and his three children: Michael and his wife Shari, Virginia (predeceased by his son in-law John Pennell), and Josephine and her husband John Varga. Carmine and his wife, Antonina, have five granddaughters (Stacey and her husband Daniel, Jody, Brooke and her husband Joseph, Erica and Lia). He cherished the times he spent with his family and also loved playing with his great grandchildren (Everly, Teagan and Saylor). He is also survived by two sister in-laws Elena and Rosalia Tropeano and many nieces and nephews.

Although he was robbed of sight and mobility at the end of his life, he can now see. He never passed up the opportunity to dance in life, and is now dancing in heaven reunited with his parents and brothers and sisters. He had every reason to be proud of how he spent his life. He lived, he danced, he laughed and he loved like no other. A loving father and devoted husband, he will be missed by his family and friends.

In memory of his generosity and kind heart and in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Elizabeth UNICO, P. O. Box 250, Elizabeth, NJ, 07207 in Carmine’s memory. Thank you.
