Obituary for Charles Vincent Sabba

Charles Vincent Sabba Sr., known as “Vinny” to his family, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022, just 3 months shy of his 94th birthday. Charlie “Vinny” was born on August 3, 1928 in Trenton, N.J. and grew up in a very large family in Newark, N.J.

In 1945, at 17 years of age, his mother gave him permission to join the U.S. Navy because he wanted to serve the country in WWII. The war ended right as he got out of boot camp and was stationed in Hawaii. Charlie served until 1953 and saw action in the Pacific during the Korean War. He was very proud to be a U.S. Veteran of war and loved America dearly (he never walked past an active duty military person or veteran without stopping to thank them for their service to our country).

After Charlie got out of the service, he lived in Rahway, NJ. for many years where he coached little league baseball and worked for the City of Rahway Public Works, retiring as a general foreman in 1984.

Charlie was a dedicated jazz fan from a young age and frequented some of the best jazz establishments, including The Royal Roost and Birdland. He was a great "jitterbugger" and loved dancing with his wife (which was a highlight of many family parties over the years).

Charlie was very proud of his Italian heritage, loved Italian food and wine, and cherished his visits to Italy (where he has many family members who loved him as well).

Charlie enjoyed long rides, travelling, spending time with family, watching football (especially the N.Y. Giants) and going to the casinos in Atlantic City.

Most importantly, Charlie was a dedicated and loving family man.

Charlie is predeceased by his parents, Gabriele And Catherine Scarpa and a brother John Scarpa.

Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Janet Sabba, née O’Donnell, his sister Antoinette Carr, née Scarpa, and two brothers, Gabriel Scarpa and Anthony Scarpa and his wife Christine. Charlie is also survived by his daughter Diane Fortier, née Sabba, and her husband Luke Fortier, his daughter Donna Cornett, née Sabba and her husband John Cornett, and his son Charles Vincent Sabba and his wife Maria Sabba, née Gentilcore; grandchildren: Dayna Campagna, née Genevrino and her husband Jason Campagna, Vittoria Sabba, Michela Angela Sabba, Alessandra Sabba, Michael Cornett and Melissa Cornett; great grandchildren Olivia Genevrino, Layla Genevrino, Antonio Campagna and Dante Campagna; great-great grandchildren Lilliana Genevrino and Anthony Genevrino and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, to name only a few of a very large family who he loved dearly.

We will miss him with all of our hearts and will think about him everyday.
