Obituary for Domenico Calello

Domenico (Mico) Calello, age 91, passed away peacefully in his home on the morning of Thursday, December 24, 2020 surrounded by the love of his family. Please keep him in your prayers.

He was born on August 17, 1929 in Spilinga, Italy and immigrated to the United States at the age of 40 years old. He resided in Kenilworth, NJ for the past 50 years, bringing a little piece of Italy with him by continuing the traditions of making homemade wine, soppresatta and ‘nduja.

Mico is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosa Pontoriero Calello, their two sons, Sam and Anthony, his daughter in law, Cheryl, and his three grandchildren, Jennifer, Nicholas and Lisa.
Mico, son of Sabatino and Antonia, was raised on a family farm in Italy with his 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He served in the Italian military for 2 years before marrying his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Rosa. Upon moving to the United States, he worked in a factory for over 25 years. During that time, he would work long hours striving to build a better life for his family.

Mico was well loved by his family and friends. He enjoyed his time most surrounded by the ones he loved. In Mico’s free time, he enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his family. Mico was generous with his time and was always the first to give to those in need and always quick to give a helping hand. Everyone knew his door was always open, for a cup of espresso or glass of vino.

All arrangements will be under the direction of Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave, Roselle Park, NJ. A viewing will be held on Thursday, December 31st from 8:30-10am, followed by a mass at Saint Theresa’s Church of Kenilworth at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to be made in Domenico Calello’s name to the PAN Foundation. The PAN Foundation helps people with life-threatening, chronic and rare diseases get the medications and treatments they need. https://www.panfoundation.org/
