Obituary for Doris R Hartman

Mrs. Doris “Dot” R. Hartman Age 88, of Roselle Park, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 16, 2020.

Dot was born on September 2, 1931, daughter of the late Harold William Rowland and Sally F. Miko in Jersey City, NJ. Dot married Frederick W. Hartman on August 15, 1953 and they began their lives together in Jersey City, NJ. In 1962 they relocated their family to Roselle Park where they enjoyed the small-town living. Dot spent her time as a homemaker and Office Manager and Accountant for the family business, Fred Hartman Television Technical Service in Newark, NJ. She has been a member of Community United Methodist Church as well as a member of the Orchid Club.

Dot was an avid sports enthusiast. As a member of the Roselle Park Recreation Committee, she was instrumental in starting girls sports in town that included baseball, basketball and softball. She was well known for coaching girls softball teams for the Roselle Park Youth Baseball League and coaching the women's softball team for Morley and McGovern Bar and Sun Tavern. She also umpired and refereed many sports. She was well known for organizing fun games for the neighborhood children that included kickball, four square, Wiffle ball, and hopscotch during the summer months. As a member of the Recreation Department, Dot was instrumental in starting an Easter Egg Hunt, Battle of the Bands, and arranging Santa Clause to come in by helicopter for the kids. During the summer months, she directed the playground camps to include arts and crafts into the summer program. She helped to arrange scholarships for special needs children to attend specialty camps. Dot was inducted into the Roselle Park Hall of Fame on May 6, 2002 for her being a staple in the sports and recreation community. She was a loyal Mets fan who often traveled to Vero Beach and Port St. Lucie, FL to see her team at spring training with her husband Fred.

Dot was predeceased by her husband Frederick William Hartman of 49 years, her parents Harold W. Rowland and Sally F. Miko, and her brother Harold W. Rowland Jr.

Dot will be missed every day by her children, Linda and her husband Jim, Fred and his wife Betsy, Carol and her husband Rick, and Ellen; grandchildren Matthew and his wife Ada Marie, Jason and his wife Corrie, Jaime and her partner Curtis, Christine and her husband George, Kevin and his wife Alyssa, and James (JT) and his wife Audrey; and Great Grandchildren Eliza, Gia and Mason and extended family in California.

There will be a graveside memorial ceremony at Memorial Graceland Cemetary in Kenilworth, NJ on Friday, August 21, 2020 at 11:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Roselle Park Recreation Department (110 East Westfield Avenue, Roselle Park, NJ 07204).
