Obituary for Esterina DeMattia

Esterina DeMattia passed away peacefully and entered Gods kingdom on January 7, 2021. Esterina Parisi DeMattia (Nonna) was born on December 14, 1926, in Vallata, Italy, a small hilltop town. Although her life was hard during the depression and war years, she and her close knit family of six siblings loved to laugh and sing. Esterina was an accomplished seamstress and moved to Foggia for employment. She moved back to Vallata in 1954 and married Genesio Giuseppe DeMattia and were lovingly married for 48 years. In 1958, they decided, after having their first 2 daughters, Rosanna & Teresa, to immigrate to the United States for a better life and then had 3 daughters, Maddalena, Maria & Carmelina. They settled in Elizabeth, NJ in 1958, then moved to Kenilworth in 1982. Esterina moved to Toms River in 2014, where she was cared for by her loving daughters, Maddalena & Rosanna.
Esterina’s life was dedicated to her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother & great grandmother. She was renowned for cooking the best Italian food ever. Family & friends fondly remember her tasty food and Italian cookies. She was known for her strength of character and ability to work hard without complaint. Esterina was spiritual and devoted to God, praying the rosary daily.
When her children were older, she worked outside the home in various places to help the family financially. She eventually worked as a lunch-aid in the Elizabeth & Cranford Public Schools, where she retired at the age of 82.
The joy of her life was to always be surrounded by her loving family and Nonna was blessed to have lived a good life of peace & happiness.
She is predeceased by her husband, Genesio Giuseppe DeMattia; parents, Teresa Crincoli Parisi & Rocco Parisi; brother Francesco & sisters, Maria & Giovanna.
Surviving is her brother, Armando Parisi & sister, Sandra Borelli; her loving daughters, Rosanna Hildebrandt (Michael), Teresa Tomasso (Richard), Maddalena Nava (Michael), Maria DeMattia & Carmelina Jerome; 13 grandchildren, Diana, Tara, Stefanie, Joseph, Arnold, Lucia, Nico, Anthony, Maria, Gina, Danielle, Mario & Rico, 13 great grandchildren, Brandon, Angelo, Vincenzo, Santino, Giovanni, Olivia, Adriana, Evan, Leonardo, Evelyn, Elizabeth, Giuliano, & Gino and many nieces & nephews.
Visitation will be private & under the direction of the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave, Roselle, Park. Family & friends are invited to join for the Mass of Christian Burial at St Theresa Church, Kenilworth on Wednesday at 11am with entombment to follow at Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth.
