Obituary for Gerald E Miller Jr.

Gerald E. Miller, Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2021.

Mastapeter Funeral Home in Roselle Park handled the arrangements.

Born in Orange, NJ, Gerry was raised there and in Roselle Park before settling to Iselin 46 years ago.

He served in the United States Air Force for more than 8 years, achieving the rank of Airman First Class and working in communications decoding classified messages. Following his service, Gerry worked for Xerox as a telecopier technician for more than 40 years before retiring.

Gerry was an avid Ham radio operator and loved to spend hours talking with people around the world. He served on the Roselle Park Auxiliary Police Department and was Deputy Director of the Roselle Park Civil Defense. He was also a member of the Roselle Office of Emergency Management and Union County Emergency Management for many years volunteering his radio communication skills during natural disasters and other emergencies. He volunteered for many years at the New York City Marathon, working communications in the trail vehicle, or “tail-end Charlie.” He was a long-time member of the Tri-County Radio Association and counts many of these Hams as his friends. He loved to spend time training new Hams - QST, the magazine for The National Association for Amateur Radio, named him one of the top Volunteer Examiners in the Hudson Valley Area.

Gerry was a devoted member of the former St. Luke’s Church in Roselle, serving as a choir member with his beautiful singing voice, as well as on the Vestry. Most recently he was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist in Linden.

Gerry was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Karen Miller, in 2020. He is survived by his two loving children – daughter Linda Uhrig and her husband Harry Sr.; son David Miller; three adored grandchildren, Lianne Gonzalez and her husband David, Harry Uhrig, Jr. and his partner Brianna Gero, and Madeline Miller; great-granddaughter Nina and great-grandson Sabastian; brother Ken Miller; sister Glenna Mayer and her husband Bill, and dear sister- and brother-in-law Linda & William Gyurko.
