Obituary for John A. Onacki

John Albert Onacki passed away peacefully in his home in Westfield, NJ on January 23, 2024. John was 95 years old. Born in Wilks Barre, PA on July 13, 1928, he also resided in Elizabeth and Cranford, NJ. He was predeceased by his parents Norbert Onacki & Anna (Stonik) Siblings Sophie Sousa, Emilia Bugel, Loretta Stopko and Marianne Brown

John’s main love was his family.
Surviving is his, wife Mary Ann, with whom he enjoyed 74 years of marriage.
Children: Gerard and his wife Donna, John Norbert and his wife Krystyna
Grandchildren: Silvanna & David Greaux, Gerard W.,Alicia and Barton Onacki. Also two great grandchildren David and Hannah Greaux. Countless family members, nieces, nephews & friends.

John led a very busy & accomplished life. He served with the NJ National Guard from 1948-1960 and was promoted to First Lieutenant Combat Strategic Instructor. He was the first individual to receive a lieutenant commission without serving in WWll. He graduated from Rutgers University with a BA & MBA in Business Administration.


He had a passion for working in many businesses. He loved to work. Thirty years ago he started Westdry Industries producing and distributing chemicals. He was a avid Rutgers sports fan. He enjoyed working on home projects, performing all types of carpentry, electrical, plumbing and landscaping. He had a big passion for his Polish heritage and history. He had made several trips to Poland. He enjoyed listening to and dancing to the Polka. He also enjoyed many years at his second home in Berwick PA.

Visitation will be on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 2 to 6pm at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park. A funeral mass will be offered on Monday, January 29, 2024, at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary and St. Michael’s Church, 52 Smith St., Elizabeth, NJ, 07201 at10am. Please be at the funeral home 9am. Interment will follow to St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
