Obituary for Joseph J Rego
Joseph J. Rego, 85, of Kenilworth, NJ, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 26, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose Marie (nee: Duca); three sons, James, Michael, and Joseph Jr.; four beloved grandchildren, Danielle, Gianna, Gabrielle, and Michael; daughter-in-laws Marie, Kim, and fiancé Toni; and a sister Muriel “Kutchie” Merlo.
Joe was a lifelong resident of Kenilworth and lived a life of devoted service to his country and community. Joe attended Jonathon Dayton High School. Upon graduation in 1957, Joe enlisted in the US Army and served three years as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne at Ft Bragg, NC. In 1961, Joseph joined the Kenilworth Police Department, retiring after 27 years as Lieutenant. Retirement did not stop Joe from serving Kenilworth, the town he loved. Joe became a councilman and then served as the Mayor of Kenilworth for six years. Joe's dedication to his community was steadfast. He fought hard and played an instrumental role in ensuring that David Brearley High School remained in Kenilworth. Joe was not only a member of various Italian-American clubs but also held the distinguished title of a 32nd-degree freemason.
Joe loved to spend summers with his family at his shore house in Mystic Islands, NJ, and winters with his many friends in Cape Coral, FL.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 4 to 8 PM in the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 1, at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. The interment will follow to Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth, NJ.
