Obituary for Joseph Whalen

Joseph “Joe” Whalen earns his Angel Wings

The Lord called Joseph Whalen home on November 26th at the Center of Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, New Jersey after a long illness.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-9pm at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave, Roselle Park. Funeral mass will be offered at Church of the Assumption, Roselle Park, at 10am on Friday. Visitation will also be at the Oravitz Funeral Home, 40 Jardin St, Shenandoah, PA 17976, on Saturday from 8:30am - 10am with burial to follow at Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery, Shenandoah, PA.

Joe was born in 1955 at Ashland Hospital in Schuylkill County, Pa. He moved and grew up in Union County New Jersey when his parents, the late Francis Joseph Whalen and Mary Lou Whalen moved there to seek employment opportunities. He graduated from Roselle Park High School in 1973 and shortly thereafter started a job in the computer operations department of Prudential in Newark that lasted until his retirement 37 years later as an IT specialist.

Joe was a lifelong resident of Roselle Park and recently moved to Cranford. He was an avid Boston Bruins, New York Jets and New York Mets fan; a gold member of the Westfield YMCA for over 30 years; and he loved fishing and playing softball, especially with the Stingers, a local softball team of the 1980's and 90's.

He is survived by his brothers Frank of Pittston, Pa., Dennis and his spouse, Tom Loeffel of Montclair, NJ, and his sister Mary Jean Whalen of Newport Beach, CA.
