Obituary for JoyMarie Rose Burt

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Joy-Marie Rose Burt, 52, of Covid-19. The essence of Joy is what’s left in her pixie dust with each of us. She loved fiercely, cared deeply and celebrated with abandon. Whether she was with her beloved mother, Fran, eating Sunday dinner, watching “1776” with her sister Linda and brother Paul, cheering on the Mets and Jets with her brother-in law Prospero or talking with her sister-in-law Sherrie about the next adventure with her nephews or looking forward to the next visit of her father and Paula. Her life revolved around all things Burt and her favorite role was as Auntie Joy, aka Joyrie. Family was always first, followed by a treasure trove of friends and coworkers at Wakefern Food Group who appreciated and respected her.

Joy emulated the name she was given in her love of dance and revelled in sharing her passion with each of her “babies” at Dancer’s Pointe. She was always on the move, giving selflessly of her time, because we know “it takes a village”. Whether she was out protesting or debating across the table at a meal, you always knew exactly where Joy stood. Always on the right side of history with civil and women’s rights, she took her passions to the streets and walked the walk. She looked forward to annual trips to the Dominican Republic with Teach Beyond Borders with her sister, Linda.

Her favorite places in the world were Italy and Las Vegas, but definitely not camping, and she was always up for an adventure. Her favorites were early morning breakfast at the St. George Diner, trips into Manhattan for Broadway plays and the Rockettes, and late nights out at rock concerts singing until nothing was left of her voice but a whisper. She collected trinkets for children and friends and shopped for the holidays year round. Always finding the perfect gift, and labelling it with one of the thousands of ducks she colored in and cut out, a relic of a dance studio fundraiser photocopying incident. She would read trashy magazines and knew every starlet and who was dating who, had spectacular long, shiny nails, and a smile that could melt a stone. To know Joy was to be surrounded in her warmth, grace and love. Gone too soon, but never far from our hearts, Joy is with us everywhere we go, especially this holiday season. We know she’ll see the moonbow from there.
