Obituary for Robert F Moldenhauer

Robert F. Moldenhauer, 94, known by all as “Bob”, passed away at his home on July 16, 2021. Born in Queens, NY, he married the love of his life, Marie DeStefano, in 1949, purchased their home in Kenilworth and looked forward to starting a family.

Bob began his career as a lab technician for Western Electric, Kearny, and after 38 dedicated years, he retired as a supervisor in the Clark location in 1989. He was also a Borough Marshall and Special Police Officer in Kenilworth for 23 years, wherein among various assignments he would direct traffic and pedestrians attending bingo and dances held at the local VFW and St. Theresa’s Church, as well as monitor student events at the high school before he retired in 1979. Though his police uniform may have contrasted with the white lab coat, head and shoe coverings he wore by day, one could easily recognize that no matter which profession, he was a conscientious hard-worker and an approachable, affable man with a ready smile. A devoted husband and father, loving son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend … he was one of the good guys.

He proudly served his country during WWII in the US Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Hyman DD732. Until recent years, he was an active member of the USS Hyman Association whose mission is to perpetuate the memories, history and camaraderie of those that gave of themselves to protect the freedoms enjoyed today. He so looked forward to seeing his shipmates and their families at the biennial reunions held across the country, as well as paying his respects at memorial services to those lost in combat during the ship’s 25 years of service to this nation. He was also proud to be associated with the Tin Can Sailors, a national organization, and was a member and Past Commander 1955-56 of the Kenilworth VFW Post 2230. He was a parishioner of St. Theresa’s Church.

Bob was predeceased by his parents; Maryellen and Alfred, siblings, Catherine, Harold “Thomas”, Michael and Grace. Surviving is his wife of 72 years of marriage, Marie; children, Robert R., Linda & Brian and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 20th from 4-7 at the Mastapeter Funeral Homes, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park. Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with burial to follow.
