Obituary for Ruth Small (Gruscznsky)

Ruth Martin Small passed away peacefully on November 18, 2021, shortly after celebrating her 100th birthday on November 4, 2021. Ruth was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Vincent and Mary Gruscznsky, and graduated from Battin High School in 1939. Ruth was a long-time resident of Kenilworth, NJ, residing there 63 years, from 1953 till 2016. Ruth held various jobs during her lifetime, and she retired from working part-time at age 80. Ruth was an avid reader, and enjoyed the beach, calligraphy and browsing in any type of store. But more than anything, she loved being a homemaker, baking, cooking and caring for her family. She was, in her children’s opinion, the world’s best cook and we still discuss what dishes of hers we miss having the most.

Ruth was predeceased by her first husband of 25 years, Frank C. Martin, her second husband of 45 years, Edward W. Small, her grandson, Constantine Demetropoulos and her son-in-law Andrew Demetropoulos. She was also predeceased by her siblings: Mildred, Sally, Fred, Beatrice and Rudolph. She is survived by her loving children, Patricia Demetropoulos, Frank V. Martin and Michele Martin, her beloved granddaughter Christina Demetropoulos, her dear sister-in-law Audrey Ruckstuhl, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 1 to 4pm at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park. Interment will be on Monday, November 22, 2021 at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Kenilworth Public Library, 548 Boulevard, Kenilworth, NJ 07033.
