I was saddened to read of Ed's passing in the Star-Ledger. I was priviledged to know and coach with Ed in the South Brunswick Soccer Club for a number of years. My three children all played in the club and at one point Ed was a club officer (I believe, the president!). As such, he was in charge of running the tryouts for the Spring season. Of course, these were held well in advance of the season, usually in the late Fall after the Fall season's games had been completed. In this particular year, if I remember correctly, there was a early snowfall and tryouts needed to be rescheduled. My kids were really into soccer, so tryouts were a important for them.
As the holiday season approached that year and the traditional songs began to be played on the radio. My wife and I discovered that our two youngest children, both daughters, (probably in elementary and middle school at the time) had altered the words to the familiar Winter Wonderland! As they sang along with the radio, when they got to the part about building the snowman, they sang......
In the meadow we will build a snowman.
And then we will pretend that he's Ed Brown!
He will ask us, "Did you go to tryouts?"
And we will tell him "no, 'cause look at the ground" (the snowfall).
We have sung it that way, with love, for about 25-30 years!
When I recall those days, I remember Ed with fondness and I am thankful that he was so generous with his time, and helping to raise my children, and many others, in a happy, healthy environment.
When I sent Ed's obituary to my oldest daughter, Anne, she expressed her sadness saying, "I just taught Will (her 8 year old son/ soccer player) the Ed Brown verse of Winter Wonderland this year!! Very sad indeed....
Ed's memory lives on in our family with great fondness. I'm sure we are just one of many!
